The Primitive Trail – A Bird’s Eye View

05/06/2015 Martin Accommodation, Africa, Camps, Photography, South Africa, Travel, Wildlife

Daylight on Day 3 showed us a river that looked very different from the night before. The rhino photo above was taken early evening on Day 2 This was the same stretch of river early morning on day 3 I had a few minutes to spare while the others got ready to leave and so I took the chance to[…]

The Primitive Trail – Close encounters of the feline kind

22/05/2015 Martin Accommodation, Camps, Photography, South Africa, Travel, Wildlife

The night seemed to be an endless succession of tossing and turning. No matter how comfortable my sleeping position seemed, that comfort would only last a short time before the rocky ground began to dig into my back or my hips. So it came as quite a surprise to find that I was actually asleep when I got woken for[…]

The Primitive Trail – On foot in iMfolozi National Park

20/05/2015 Martin Accommodation, Africa, Camps, Photography, South Africa, Travel

What have I let myself in for? In May 2015 I was invited to join a small group of friends on a 5 day / 4 night hiking trail in South Africa’s iMfolozi National Park. Without giving any real thought to what such a trail might involve I said ‘Yes’. I love being out in the wilderness and sleeping under[…]

Hwange National Park boasts one of the largest surviving populations of Wild Dog and our guests staying at Nehimba in northern Hwange, the last few weeks have had three amazing sightings in and around camp!

Brendan Judge our resident guide and pro photographer caught these beautiful images of five of the dogs, a few kms from camp on a recent drive with guests – they were very relaxed around the vehicle while our guests observed these rare and magnificent animals! It is clear in the photos that one of the dogs has lost an eye – scars from the wild battlefields! There were two mature dogs and three pups spotted together here.

A few days later the excitement levels went up a notch, when the dogs were seen twice in camp – both times hunting. The first was a smaller pack of three hunting a Steenbok and the second a pack of ten dogs who displayed their excellent predator skills as they broke up into two packs around the waterhole and chased after a baby Impala. They are known as Africa’s most effective hunters due to their smart hunting tactics as a pack and their constant communication and size of packs they hunt in. Nehimba has always provided excellent arm chair safaris and this was a hugely exciting sighting for our guests which they enjoyed from their spacious tent decks all with perfect front row views!

We have impressive Impala numbers in and around camp, as it is baby season which should keep the dogs nearby too, so our guests should be in for more rewarding game viewing! Nehimba is open and offers thrilling opportunities to be close to nature while enjoying our excellent specials on offer. Contact us now to find out more on res2@imvelosafarilodges.com.

Thank you Brendan Judge for the images.
