Tanzania is one of our favourite countries. In particular we love the relaxed pace of life in southern Tanzania and the opportunities it provides for exceptional wildlife viewing in relative tranquility.
The two reserves we have selected, Selous and Ruaha, combine an incredible abundance and diversity of game with relatively small visitor numbers, making them ideal for more discerning travellers and especially those interested in photography.
The Selous Game Reserve is Africa’s largest, encompassing an astounding 55,000 square kilometres, and home to over 800,000 mammals, including lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, buffalo, hippopotamus, crocodile, zebra, impala, wildebeest, hartebeest, waterbuck, giraffe, kudu, warthog, hyena, jackal, wild dog, mongoose and at least 440 bird species.
The second Reserve we visit is Ruaha National Park. The vast area of the park, 10,300 square kilometres, varies between mountains and escarpments, grassland plains, rocky kopjes and riverine areas. As well as leopard, lion, cheetah and hunting dog, Ruaha is home to several rare species including Greater and Lesser Kudu, Roan and Sable antelopes.
